umumummummumumuummm.

i seriously wish i had something cool to report...
however, other than listening to lots of music i'm at a loss.
i was loving the hot hot heat earlier this week, but i also am enjoying some rain.
it smells so fresh and sweet out.
lets talk about movies i want to see:

- the trotsky
- dinner for schmucks (july 23rd)
- the other guys (august 6th)
- true grit (december 25th)
- the rum diary
- you will meet a tall dark stranger

actually...after looking through movie releases for the year there are very few that i'm actually excited about. what a let down. well, lets instead just watch a funny jimmy kimmel clip.

We are sharks.

I saw Up In The Air a couple weeks back and figured I'd get around to doing a QUICK review of it...

Rating: B+

I really liked this movie, I thought the casting was amazing, and it was funny, and it was interesting, and it made you think a little. My thoughts on it are basically the same as Kaur's (HERE)... only I didn't love it, I just really liked it. The only thing that kept me from full on loving it was the end, the end doesn't fall in line with what I believe - but for the movie, I guess it was decent.

Oh, and Anna Kendrick (Bella's friend from Twilight...) is amazing, and hilarious. I was pretty suprised by her.

That's all.

Love, Keiko.

go.

Movies, movies, movies. This morning my aunt and I thought up a list of movies to see while she's in town for the holidays, here is what we came up with:
  • Up In The Air
  • The Hurt Locker
  • An Education
  • New York, I Love You
  • The Young Victoria
And here are some that I want to see that didn't make the list...
  • Precious (she has already seen it)
  • Brothers (I love Natalie... and Jake)
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • The Invention of Lying
Love, Keiko.

p.s. Christmas eve!!!!

what's in your backpack?

i saw up in the air last night!!!
here's a review.

up in the air: A
liked it a lot...not sure if i loved it. i'll try not to give anything away, but i felt as though things worked out a little too perfectly for my liking. i liked all the actors and actresses a lot, they all did a bang on job. seriously though...george clooney can do no wrong. the guy is swauve and smooth just like he is supposed to be. i almost felt though this character was written for him. actually...for some reason i feel as though the film's writer did in fact write the part for george. anyways, the music, cinematography, style everything was perfect. i walked away with lots to think about and okay...i change my mind i loved it. i don't know if its going to walk away with lots of awards this season simply because i don't know if the concept is strong enough for what awards are normally given for. its not about war or racism or a huge musical hit, its just a simple slick movie about relationships. hmm...i gotta run so i can't write more...i did like this movie and i'd recommend it.

glorious basterds.

inglourious basterds: A+

so i realized i never did a review for inglorious basterds even though i saw it right when it came out. i just watched it again this morning. i am a quentin tarantino fan through and through, so needless to say i loved it. it's totally entertaining, gruesome, indulgent, and ridiculous...but so much fun! christoph waltz was menacing and loveable somehow at the same time, and his performance is absolute perfection. the performances by brad and co. were also great and i have nothing really bad to say about this movie. love the style. love the story. love the movie.

B- (C+, maybe?)

Last night my sister and I went to see the movie Paper Heart, which I was pretty stoked on at the end of summer. Really, the only reason I wanted to see it was Michael Cera... and I wasn't a Charlyne Yi fan, at all. Everything I've seen of her on youtube (which isn't much) has annoyed me a little bit.  Anyway,  it was super quirky and kind of cute. I wasn't blown away or anything, but it was good. Charlyne had some pretty funny moments - her awkwardness was sometimes funny, I guess (but was also boring). The romance part of it was adorable. And I loved Michael (obviously). The whole idea of the movie was alright - Charlyne doesn't know what love is, so she travels across the USA to interview people to try to learn. It was neat to hear the stories/takes on what love is. And in the end love has no single definition

Oh, the ending was shit.

Love, Keiko.

Ten Day Countdown

There are only ten days until the Calgary International Film Festival!  I spent my afternoon narrowing down the list of movies that I want to go see.
  1. Gigantic - My number one pick. This is a movie I've been looking forward to for a while.  Zooey Deschanel and Paul Dano... I am sold.
  2. Breaking Upwards
  3. My Suicide
  4. White on Rice - I watched this trailer when it was release on Apple, it looks hilarious.
  5. The Exploding Girl
I didn't go through all the films that are playing, I made note of the ones that immediately caught my eye... and then narrowed that list down. Tell me what you plan to see!!

Love, Keiko.

They didn't really belong there. But there they were.

I've been feeling pretty uninspired lately when it comes to blogging (but I have been on top of all my school work and readings!), and I still don't have a reliable internet connection in my house.  So, because of this I am going to keep it simple.  I am going to review Adam.

Rating: A

Adam is just a beautiful, endearing, heartwarming (and heartbreaking… really heartbreaking) story about falling in love, growing up and moving on.  I don't know much about Asperger's (other than what I know from reading the book Don't Look Me In the Eye) so I can't comment on how the syndrome is portrayed, but the character Adam is simply adorable (and I may have fallen a bit in love with Hugh Dancy... but I also fell in love with Rose Byrne).  From the moment these two met I had so much hope for the two of them, yet at the same time I was so nervous for the relationship and how it would turn out.  What ends up happening (I won’t spoil it) is unexpected and slightly disappointing, just because it isn’t what I was wanting for the two of them... but I think it was a good ending, it made sense. Oh, and I hated Rose’s dad, Peter Gallagher is so good at playing character’s that are easy to hate/get under your skin, ugh (but Sandy from the O.C was the sweetest)… I wasn’t too into the whole side story about Rose’s family situation – but it’s completely understandable, and is a good parallel to Adam.  I think everyone should see this movie, please.

Love, Keiko.

p.s. I planned to post a youtube clip of a scene that I love - but there are just too many.

here it is.

Sometime at the start of summer/in the spring Kaur posted trailers of movies that she (we) think will be awesome.  One of those trailers was for a movie called Adam - looks adorable! Anyway, I saw the trailer for it again when it played before (500) Days of Summer and have been super stoked on it ever since.  Good news!  It is currently playing at the Globe (thanks to a sweet friend for letting me know), so my sister and I are going to see it tomorrow.  It will be good.

this is in response to kaur's last post

instead of 80's movie marathon i think we should have an 80's (bratpack inspired) dance party.  i mean, did you watch that video she posted? how much fun does all that dancing look? (answer: the most fun ever)

let's watch some movies.

this week was a movie week for me.  i'm not going to really review the movies that i saw - but i'll write a bit about each.

funny people: B
not judd apatow's best, but still funny! some parts were laugh out loud hilarious, and some parts were a little bit drawn out.  i didn't have very high expectations (i had heard some bad reviews) so it was good.  overall a pretty decent movie.

julie and julia: B-
umm, not really my kind of movie.  meryl streep was amazing, and i love amy adams - so they were great.  i went to see this with a few of my cousins, my aunt and BFF... other than us, i am pretty sure nearly everyone else in the theatre was over the age of 65.

the time traveller's wife: B-
i really wish that this movie was better!!  i think it was a tough movie to make, and it was okay.  i loved the cast, and the movie was beautiful... it was just a bit confusing - the whole time traveling thing was really explained enough and it was tough keeping track of time.  but i enjoyed it.

i love you, man: A
HILARIOUS! i have been wanting to see this for a really long time, and it was great.  i watched it alone in my bedroom, and was laughing hysterically to my myself.  paul rudd is just amazing, and his character's awkwardness is just perfect.  ahh, i need to watch this one again.

the watchmen: B+
i watched this last night, really late at night.  mid-way through i started drifting in and out of sleep, so i missed some parts i think were important... because i was so confused! (so i need to re-watch it).  the story and concept is awesome, and i think the comic book feel was captured pretty well.  some parts was disgusting and too gruesome (but at the same time was pretty cool...) - my little brother caught part of the movie and commented "is this a saw movie? or what?"

on the topic of trailers.

i was watching the alice in wonderland trailer.
i realized i didn't know where the 'mad hatter's' name originated
i looked it up via wikipedia.
i found this:
  • although the name 'mad hatter' was undoubtedly inspired by the phrase "as mad as a hatter," there is some uncertainty as to the origins of this phrase. as mercury was used in the process of curing felt used in some hats, it was impossible for hatters to avoid inhaling the mercury fumes given off during the hat making process. hatters and mill workers often suffered mercury poisoning as residual mercury vapor caused neurological damage including confused speech and distorted vision. it was not unusual then for hatters to appear disturbed or mentally confused; many died early as a result of mercury poisoning. however, the mad hatter does not exhibit the symptoms of mercury poisoning. principal symptoms of mercury poisoning are "excessive timidity, diffidence, increasing shyness, loss of self-confidence, anxiety, and a desire to remain unobserved and unobtrusive.
